Club News

An evening with a group from the Surrey Research Park - 29th June

We hosted a group of young professionals from the Surrey Research Park,
who enjoyed a fun evening of bowls on our green.
The event went off very well and everyone enjoyed the experience.

Guildford in Bloom - Saturday 2nd June

This year we again had a really nice day for the event, which was was well attended by the public,
although the figures were slightly down on last year.

‘Cafe Castle Green’ made £398.60 (made up of £344.60 for tea and cakes and £54 from the sale of books and DVDs).

This was a good result for the Club and thanks to all of you who helped in the Cafe or supplied cakes or did both.

The Flower Beds were opened by the new Mayor of Guildford, Councillor Mike Parsons, with his wife Jean.

Bowls Week at Bembridge I.O.W

This year's Bowls away week was enjoyed by seventeen members of the Club,
who entered the Open Fours Competition, run by Warners Leisure at their Bembridge hotel.

Once again the week was enjoyed by all,  although, apart from John Reeves,
we did have a great deal of success on the green.

John formed part of a scratch team, made up of two players from Cove and one from the local side.
With John as skip the team fought their way to the final, but sadly lost by a single shot.

Off the green there was the opportunity to celebrate two birthdays,
the first being that of Club Captain Colin and then followed by Sue.

The photos of the celebrations speak for themselves and helped make the week one of the best so far.

The Club has provisionally booked the 2019 bowls away week at Bembridge, (March 4th -8th).
If you are interested in going on this trip, please contact John Reeves who has all the details.

Club Competition Finals - 2017

Report from Colin Summerhayes

Well, we enjoyed a spectacular day on the green,

with fine sunshine instead of predicted cloud.

It was a scorcher, and pretty soon the blazers came off.

I should start by reminding you that the Pairs competition

had to be played early, on Wednesday,

when David Taylor and Tim Sampson managed to get

the best of Hazel Tappenden and Colin Downham.

First off was the Legge Handicap, played on rink 3,

in which Brian West managed to get the best of Lawrie Briggs.

Congratulations to Lawrie for getting this far in his second year with the club!

Jill Bird and I had a tussle in the 2-Woods match, on rink 2,

with even scores on the penultimate end, which Jill won by 1.

 A close run thing.

We then paused for an excellent Ploughman's Lunch,

with delicious grapes on the side, masterminded by Shirley West,

ably assisted by Viv Smith and Ann Lewis, and followed with strawberries and cream:

a classic English summer lunch washed down with a glass of Pimms.

There were a good lot of prizes to be had in the raffle as well.

After the break, Jill and Lynn fought it out for the Ladies Trophy,

which Jill managed to win back and

Rob Williams managed to defeat our Club Captain,

Patrick Andrew, for the Men's Trophy.

For tea we enjoyed flapjacks and cake and tea,

thanks again to the efforts of the ladies.

The final three games featured Jill Bird versus Lawrie Briggs

fighting it out for the 3 Woods Trophy, which Lawrie gained!

Then Sue Secrett and Hazel battled it out for the West Trophy,

a close run thing with a tied score

just before Hazel bowled the clinchers.

Hazel's Trophy is long overdue, but her perseverance paid off.

Well done Sue for getting this far in your first full year.

Finally, Rob Williams and I tussled for the Veterans Trophy,

 which Rob won handily.

Before concluding I should like to thank the markers:

Ann Lewis, John Reeves, Hazel Tappenden, and Patrick Andrew,

and also those who sat at the ends of the rinks to put up the score.

And to those of you who came and cheered and clapped on the day.

And, of course, the contestants, who bravely fought it out under a blazing sun.

From Colin

You don't have to come up to the green to get coaching advice from me.

You can easily get it on-line, and I urge you to do so.

Don't be proud. No matter how long you've been bowling, or how good you think you are,

there's always something you can learn that will improve your play

(That's why Andy Murray spends a fortune hiring the likes of Ivan Lendl to help him, and Djokovitch hires Boris Becker).

But you can do it much more cheaply!

I suggest you try Googling this Youtube bowls training video from New Zealand:

Your screen will come up with "2 Delivery - YouTube"

Click on that, and watch.

Keep it running, as it goes through several sections focusing on different skills

(until you get to where it comes up with Hong Kong pairs, then you know you've seen the whole lot).

Then REMEMBER IT AND try putting it into PRACTICE.
